How to Store Kitchen Staples

Get the most from your kitchen staples—such as eggs, bread, fruits and vegetables—by storing them properly.

Eggs: If your refrigerator has a designated box for storing eggs, keep them there. Regardless, eggs are porous, so keep them away from strong-smelling foods.

Bread: There are several options for storing bread: It can be wrapped in plastic then kept in a cool, dry place; it can be placed in a breadbox; or it can be sliced and frozen to be used as needed.

Apples: Before storing a bunch of apples, make sure to sort out any that are spoiling, as they will make the whole lot go bad faster. Place the good ones in a plastic bag and store in your refrigerator crisper.

Berries: Store berries uncovered in your refrigerator. They spoil quickly when damp, so don't rinse them until you're ready to use.

Leafy greens: Wash and dry the greens thoroughly then place them in a plastic container lined with a paper towel. Store the container in your refrigerator vegetable bin.

Root vegetables (e.g., carrots, parsnips, beets and turnips): These can also be stored in your refrigerator vegetable bin. No other preparation is necessary before storing.
